Hangin’ Around

Posted on May 22nd, 2006. About Flowers, Jogging Bear.

Rainy days and Mondays always get me down. That’s actually not true - I like rainy days. But at least this isn’t a rainy Monday. Yikes. Did you guess I was making another bear? No? Well, then you were wrong. But wait, because not everything about our friend has been yet revealed (remember, this is a “surprise” for someone). For the time being, we’ll leave him here in the window, to silently contemplate the sky, the street, his life and meaning thereof. He can’t wait to get eyes so he can see all the crazy people down there in Brooklyn.

More flowers to brighten your Monday. Enjoy!

Rainy Days in NY

Posted on May 16th, 2006. About Flowers, Jogging Bear, Yarn.

Just got a yarn order from Knit Picks - mostly Merino Style and Palette. There’s so much I can’t fit it all in the picture, and suddenly I feel like I’ve been very extravagant. But it’s Knit Picks! Inexpensive, beautiful yarn, how can you go wrong? I am building up quite a stash, but actually every bit of yarn I buy is intended for something specific. Really!

Not much knitting going on besides the little suprise gift I’m making. Soon, it will all come together into a recognizable shape, but until then…

It’s yucky weather right now, but it does make pretty things grow. Here are some pics from April and May at the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens. Hope everyone is enjoying spring wherever you are!

Rockin the Steeks

Posted on April 14th, 2006. About Deep V Argyle Vest, Flowers.

I tried a crochet steek for the first time on a swatch for the argyle sweater. They are holding up well, yay! It was pretty exciting to cut through the swatch, and it felt somewhat liberating, as well. Let’s see if I feel the same way after I finish my mom’s C. Black Roses and have to cut through that sucker.

Here’s the little bit I’ve (re)started on the Deep-V. I’m using size 4 needles which should give me (about) the right gauge, but I’ll probably need to adjust the shaping and number of rows since my row gauge will most definitely be off by at least a little bit…

And just for some more spring fun, some lovely tulips. You can’t be grumpy in the morning when this is the sight that greets you.

Black Roses? How About Orange Tulips?

Posted on April 6th, 2006. About Carpathian Black Roses, Flowers.

Here’s just a little bit more progress on the C. Black Roses. (A little picture for little progress.) I am using the yarn called for in the pattern, Hifa 2, which I bought in a kit from Nordic Fiber Arts. When you’re used to working with merino or alpaca yarn, this stuff doesn’t feel as soft and is not as inviting when you first touch it. But it is great to knit with, and the resulting fabric is quite pleasing, too.

This sweater will probably go relatively fast until I get to the main fair isle pattern near the top. Although “relatively fast” for me would probably be super slow for someone who uses both hands to knit colorwork patterns. I am a slow, right-handed knitter. I tried to teach myself to knit left-handed, as well, but gave up because it was just going to take me too long to feel as comfortable and be as quick as I am with my right at this point.

Right now, black roses don’t seem as appealing as these orange tulips. Yay spring.
